Congregate Dining
Center Meals are provided along with an educational/recreational program
to those eligible clients who are self-sufficient enough to be transported
to a dining center. Each meal contains one-third of the daily Recommended
Dietary Allowances (RDA).

TRANSPORTATION
Services are
available to approved clients who need access to medical appointments,
pharmacies and grocery stores. Specialized handicap vans are available.
Rides to congregate dining centers are also provided for those eligible.
Transportation is available to seniors over the age of 60, living at home
who lack the ability or means to transport themselves and have no one
available in the community to assist them to and from essential services.
Transportation will be provided depending on availability of vehicles,
drivers, and weather conditions.

HOMEMAKER SERVICES
Staff provide assistance with light
housekeeping, laundry and grocery shopping. Homemakers visit on a weekly or
bi-weekly basis. Once clients are approved, they will automatically receive
service, if there is an opening in that area. If there is no opening
available, they will be placed on a waiting list and come off according to
their homemaker need score.

Relief is offered to caregivers by
providing supervision of an impaired adult who is in their care.

OMBUDSMAN
The Ombudsman: Acts as a resource for information and
counseling for the citizens regarding institutional and community based
long-term care options, and general issues and concerns affecting the
elderly.
Protects and represents the rights of persons in
Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Facilities, and Adult Care Residences or
those receiving long-term care services in their home.
Seeks to educate consumers of long-term care
facilities and their families about their rights and how to advocate on
their own behalf.
Serves as a point of entry whereby complaints made by
or on behalf of older persons receiving long-term care services, can be
received, investigated, and resolved.
Serves as an advocate and/or mediator between
residents and those responsible for their care.
Provides relevant education for facilities, agencies
and community groups.

ELDER ABUSE PREVENTION
Elder Abuse is the mistreatment of frail or disabled
persons who may not be able to protect themselves from harm.
Some types of abuse are:
- Physical Abuse
- Mental Abuse
- Neglect
- Exploitation / Financial Abuse
Who are the potential victims?
Elder Abuse prevention will be promoted by the Local
Ombudsman who will deliver group presentations. The presentations will
include types of abuse, the abuser profile, the victim's profile, signs of
abuse, and procedures for reporting abuse will also be discussed.

VIRGINIA INSURANCE COUNSELING AND ADVOCACY PROJECT
(VICAP)
VICAP is a health insurance counseling program for individuals and
their families when they need help understanding and receiving benefit from
Medicare and private coverage. People can receive counseling from trained
volunteers and staff in person or by telephone. Counselors are not connected
with any insurance company, nor are they licensed to sell insurance. The
program also provides group presentations in the community. There is no
charge for these services in the following Virginia counties: Amherst,
Appomattox, Amelia, Bedford, Buckingham, Campbell, Cumberland, Nottoway, and
the cities of Lynchburg and Bedford.
The next general enrollment dates for Medicare Part D prescription plans are
November 15 through December 31. Individuals just becoming eligible for
Medicare can enroll before these dates. People with Medicare on low incomes
should inquire about extra help for this year.

WEATHERIZATION
The Weatherization Program pays for various
improvements to the homes of low income people to help reduce their home
energy cost. Weatherization services are provided at no cost to both
home-owners and renters who qualify. Eligibility is determined by income,
with priority given to the elderly and handicapped. Repair services must be
necessary to maintain the health and safety of the occupants. Service area
includes Amherst, Appomattox, and Bedford Counties.

BEDFORD RIDE
Bedford Ride is dedicated to improving the quality of
life for Bedford citizens by providing better access to non-emergency
medical services.
Residents of communities served may be eligible for
Bedford Ride non-emergency medical transportation services if they have no
other practical means of transportation available and if they are disabled,
elderly, or low-income.
Once eligibility has been established and a medical
appointment has been made, passengers contact the office staff to arrange
for transportation. Transportation request must be made a minimum of two
days in advance. Medical appointments should be scheduled between 8:30 am
and 3:00 pm.
Our direct expenses are very low thanks to our many
volunteer drivers. Passengers receiving transportation are asked to pay a
small fee to help cover a portion of our operating costs.
Bedford Ride is administered by the Central Virginia
Area Agency on Aging, but obtains significant volunteer support from
independent volunteer leadership boards in various parts of the county.
